FBE is working with the York County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve on a collaborative watershed planning project for the Kennebunk River. The Kennebunk River extends 18-miles from its headwaters at Kennebunk Pond to its outlet at the eastern end of Gooch’s Beach. The tidal estuary is home to 13 marinas with a total of 360 feet of linear dock space. This project includes stakeholders including six Towns; Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve; Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District; Kennebunk Sewer District; Maine Department of Environmental Protection; Maine Healthy Beaches, and the Natural Resource Conservation Service. FBE analyzed existing water quality data to inform watershed surveys in known hotspot regions of the watershed. Through stakeholder and public input, FBE will synthesize these data into a final watershed plan to guide monitoring and restoration in the watershed for the next ten years.
