Watchic Lake Water Quality Monitoring and Watershed Protection Plan

Standish, Maine

FBE has worked with the Watchic Lake Association (WLA) since 2016 to protect the water quality of the lake from development in the watershed. In 2016, FBE and WLA established an ongoing water quality monitoring program that includes both integrated core samples for trophic state indicators as well as continuous monitoring using a buoy system at the deep spot. These loggers allow WLA to track the onset of thermal stratification, pinpoint spring and fall turnover, and determine the extent and duration of anoxia (zero oxygen conditions) at the bottom. FBE and WLA used this rich data history in conjunction with updated watershed and shoreline surveys for nonpoint source pollution to develop a watershed protection plan that will guide protection efforts over the next 10 years.
