Climate Change Monitoring with Land Trusts

Maine

FBE worked with Momentum Conservation (formerly Southern Maine Conservation Collaborative) and its member land trusts to develop a network of climate change observatories (CCO) that collect important observations and data, connect people with the local environment, and teach them about climate science. The CCO builds on decades of limited local monitoring data that has been collected on land trust properties by expanding data collection activities to incorporate climate change aspects. In particular, the observations will keep track of ongoing erosion, especially cliff bluffs and marsh edges, and monitor king tide and storm inundation on land trust properties. An example site for this work is Portland Trail's Fore River Sanctuary. In this location, Momentum Conservation, Portland Trails, and FBE developed a picture post monitoring site to build a long-term record of changes over time. These images can be used to study climate and human impacts on the wetland, such as wetland subsidence, inundation, shifts in salinity, and changes to wetland ecology.
